SILENCE: THE BEST ORGANIZER OF ALL

As a professional organizer for the past 10 years, I have been sharing lots of tips, tricks and tools with my clients to help them get and stay more streamlined. I want them to feel empowered to focus on the things that matter most to them – their passions, their projects, and the people they want to spend time with.

What I’ve learned over the last decade of personal experience is that the best tool for staying organized and focused is not a product – it’s not a basket, shelf, or a caddy............................

A clutter-free life is only a step away!

CLEARING AWAY THE UNNECESSARY
(Reprinted from Daily Om)

You may enjoy strong self-discipline which enables you to complete your tasks in record time today. With this level of dedication to getting things done, you could make great progress in both your professional and personal endeavors. Even better, you can take this focus to the next level by turning your attention to activities that would ultimately make your life easier later on, such as organizing and de-cluttering your surroundings. If you take some time to think about the areas of your life where you need to be most productive, you will find many opportunities to transform your workflow into one that is easy and unobstructed. In order to make room for this new easy flow, consider clearing away the unnecessary in all aspects of your life today, including professional, domestic, financial, spiritual, and emotional.

Clearing away objects and habits that no longer serve our highest good can make room for more beneficial circumstances to enter. We are accumulators by nature, consistently adding to our store of provisions, collections, tools, and knowledge. Though our store of items can help us feel secure, we can also reach a point when our cluttered surroundings become overwhelming and restrictive. Choosing to clear away the unnecessary things in our lives can instantly lift our moods and energize us, improve our productivity, and create openings for greater abundance to enter our lives. By releasing that which no longer serves you today, you can create a lighter and more productive environment that enhances all aspects of your life.

MAJOR HOME OFFICE REORGANIZATION

I just did a major home office reorganization today and I feel great!

For months, I was feeling claustrophobic with a huge Metroshelf unit towering over my desk area. Just by moving it to another, less prominent corner of the room, I created a ton more breathing space.

I got rid of papers and knick-knacks that were clogging my creative flow. Bye-bye! Fun stuff will be put out on the front stoop and scooped up in minutes.

I placed all the stationery and office supplies that I use on a regular basis within arm's reach, and put files and other stuff I use less often further away from me.

For less than $50, I got all the organizing equipment I needed at The Container Store. (They have a lot of sales now-a-days.)

A bonus of this whole process: Because more stuff is off the floor, it will be easier to clean in here. And.................I'm feeling more inspired already!!

TEN TIPS FOR GETTING ORGANIZED

MYTH: Being organized means having a home that resembles the pages of Real Simple magazine, with nary an object out of place!

TRUTH: Being organized means having a few systems and tools in place which free you up to spend more time with your friends and family and less time hunting for things you need or stressing about piles of stuff that have no rhyme or reason.

Here are ten organizing practices to get you going:

1. Set aside time to open your mail every day! Open mail over a trash/recycling can and throw out solicitations and other junk mail. Daily mail sorting prevents paper pile-up and the resulting feelings of overwhelm.

2. Use the RAFT acronym for handling papers.

R = Refer to someone else
A = Act on it if the action takes 5 minutes or less OR put it in an action pile
F = File it
T = Toss it!

3. Put old financial or archival documents which you don’t need to refer to often in a banker’s box and store on a high shelf. Create homes (binders, files, whatever works for you) for papers which come in on a regular basis – financial statements, bills, etc.

4. For de-cluttering, set aside a specific amount of time. It’s helpful to use a kitchen timer. Pick an area that you know you will be able to complete in that time frame – e.g., two shelves on the bookshelf, a dresser drawer, the top of your desk.

5. Look at one item at a time. Make a decision about each item before going on to the next. Do you want to keep it, toss it, repair it, or donate it? Make a pile for each category.

6. While going through books, clothing, jewelry, etc., ask yourself: Do I need it? Do I love it? Do I use it? Do I want it? Do I feel good when I wear it, use it, look at it? Keep or let go based on the answer.

7. When you come up against “I might need this someday,” trust that you can get what you need when the occasion arises.

8. With gifts and other objects of sentimental value, ask yourself: “Can I hold onto the memory without holding onto the object?” Choose the most precious memories and store or display them so that they are easily accessed – in albums or decorative storage boxes.

9. Have a designated place in your apartment for give-aways so that everyone can get into the habit of putting unused or unwanted stuff there. Choose a charity that you can easily walk or cab your stuff to, or one that makes pick-ups.

10. Put a vase of flowers anywhere in your apartment where clutter tends to accumulate. It’s less tempting to let clutter build up where there is beauty!

KIND WORDS FROM OTBKB

This is a reprint from the blog of a new client, Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn .

Okay. So I finally succumbed. Last week I called Eleanor Traubman of Creative Times and a professional organizer and cried: SOS. I was feeling completely overwhelmed and disorganized and I could not face the big green tub of unopened mail I had to look at and file.

Luckily Eleanor had time the very next day to come over. Phew. What a life saver.

How to describe what Eleanor does. First of all, she is very calm and calming and she doesn't judge. Maybe she was just being nice, but she didn't faint when she saw my existing filing system or the huge tub of mail.

Then we sat down and began to organize me. Basically she taught me a couple of tricks. The first one is a wonderful acronym: RAFT.

I kept thinking life raft and what a life saver Eleanor is.

R means refer. A means action. F means file. T means toss.

So that's what we did for the better part of two hours. And as we did this, Eleanor created these lovely file labels for me and I felt like a patient in a nice warm bed getting chicken soup in the form of organized files.

After two hours life saver Eleanor left me with a shopping list and a smile. Oh and an appointment for next week. Her number is this. Call her now if you need SOS: 917-499-7395.

ORGANIZING AND FEELIN' GROOVY

After working with a client to help them organize their home yesterday, I got inspired to come back to my place and do some organizing for myself. I started by cleaning the apartment, a task I always procrastinate on but always feel great after I complete. After cleaning, I started weeding through my rolodex, paper files, supply drawers, bookshelves, and email inbox.

As I went along this path, I made mental notes of all the loose to-dos that had been floating around my head and needed attention. I wrote all those to-dos down on a lined notepad so they actually have somewhere to land. It's a lot easier to get things done that way. And it frees up tons of mental and physical energy.

I also took a bunch of fun items I no longer needed, used, or wanted and put them out on the front stoop for the taking. I know that some folks like to save up a bunch of unwanted stuff until they have enough for a tag sale. Living in a small space, it just doesn't make sense for us to do that. Plus I love the immediate satisfaction of having the stuff gone and knowing that someone else is enjoying it.

Every time I go on a cleaning and organizing spree, I feel like a million bucks. I'm ready to take on the world!

PS - Want some help organizing your life? Want to lighten your load before Fall rolls around?Give me a call at 917-499-7395. I've been helping parents, artists, and entrepreneurs get organized since 1999.

THERE IS MAGIC IN THE WEEDING

Every week, I have been weeding in a different part of my life.
These have been my projects so far:

Weeding Paper Files

Weeding the Rolodex

Weeding Computer Files

Weeding Clothes

Weeding Toiletries

Weeding Kitchen Stuff

Weeding Books

It takes discipline to do something each week on this path and the rewards are great.

I have noticed that after each weeding project, I feel freer, lighter, more open for new people, experiences, opportunities, miracles, to come my way. And they are coming my way, one person and experience and miracle at a time.

De-cluttering, like gardening, is an ongoing process. You keep plucking out the stuff that is no longer useful, relevant or beautiful to make room for new growth.
