SPOKE THE HUB (STH) is offering both full and partial scholarships to young dancers aged 8 to 18 years, with or without previous experience, based on financial need and merit. The audition will take the form of a modern dance class and will include warm-up, improvisation, and combinations across the floor. (Students do not need to prepare any material in advance). Dance scholarships will be awarded for classes in Modern Dance Technique, Ballet,
Improvisation/Choreography/Performance, and others to be selected.

The fall term for scholarship students will begin Monday, September 12, 2011 and run through February, 2012.

Teenagers may also be considered for work/study internships in our office. Applicants must call to set up an appointment and families must bring a copy of their most recent tax return to the audition. Students involved in dance at STH have plenty of opportunities to create and perform their own original choreography throughout the year. They also work with professional guest artists, and are often invited to participate in SPOKE THE HUB's professional adult productions.

Over the years, SPOKE THE HUB's Young Artists have earned additional scholarships to the American Dance Festival, the Alvin Ailey School, and the Feld Ballet, in addition to colleges throughout the country. They have also performed with STH's adult company at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, at the World Trade Center, and at Lincoln Center, as well as performing independently at the Kitchen, P.S. 122, DTW, and with Meredith Monk/The House

All youth company members are required to take a minimum of two technique classes a week at SPOKE THE HUB, and must be available for occasional additional weekend rehearsals and performances throughout the year. This pre-professional program is geared toward developing tomorrow's most outstanding and creative theater artists.

SPOKE THE HUB RENTING SPACE TO TEACHING ARTISTS AND HEALTH PRACTITIONERS

Spoke the Hub (STH) is now seeking the area's finest massage therapists, acupuncturists, Alexander teachers, nutritionists and other kinds of bodyworkers to join our fabulous team of independent teaching artists and health practitioners in our newly renovated facility in the heart of Park Slope.

Prime movers and shakers in Brooklyn and beyond since 1979, Spoke the Hub has offered creative arts and fitness classes to legions of infants through adult professionals in Park Slope for over three decades. With the completion of our recent massive renovation and expansion of our Union Street center, we are now able to broaden the spectrum of what we can offer to community residents, as well as redefine the interface and interconnection between art, spirit, community and health. Please join us!

The STH bodywork room rental includes ---
a separate entrance and intercom system,
use of a shared waiting room, bathroom and shower,
wifi access,
a washer/dryer onsite**,
discounted rent (25% off) on small adjacent meeting room and the two bigger studio spaces for group sessions, special workshops, master classes, and private movement sessions**

Short term rentals: $25/hour (4 hour minimum; non-refundable)
Long term rentals (6-12 months or more): $250 a day/month; 2 months security required.

This ground floor work space has internal parking and an internal loading dock, 12 - 14' ceilings, and a separate street entrance. Perfect for a small business or artists who need space but do not currently need a lot of natural light (space currently has one big window at the front of the building but because of massive renovation of the entire block next door, this space also has the potential for adding new windows on the newly exposed eastern wall of our building.)

Currently, the space is divided into several small offices, a parking space, a painting studio and common area. Space currently shares a bathroom and utilities (220 electric and gas space heater) with the music space next door.

Owners would be willing to gut the entire space and put in a separate bathroom ---costs to be negotiated. Also note: must enjoy classical music and jazz (which often emanates from adjacent music space!) Terrific building management company on call 24/7.

"Many of you ask me to keep you posted when space becomes available at the Gowanus, so this just in: there seems to be some transitional movement this summer in one of the ground floor spaces at the Gowanus on Douglass Street. Regina, who is a painter and holds the lease there, is looking to share the space with one or two others I think. Please contact her directly if you are interested in this workspace share (Regina McFadden <Regmcfadden@earthlink.net>)

I think Regina might also be open to re-structuring the current space layout too if necessary, so talk to her. We --- Spoke the Hub -- are upstairs, musicians next door, visual artists on 2nd floor, architect on 3rd, etc. It is truly a great group of creative people in the building right now!

Regina sez: Great work space for reasonable price. Approx. 180 sq. ft. for $525/month. Turn-of-the-century industrial building. Space has exposed brick walls, very high ceilings, private (locked) with shared bathroom, kitchenette and 500 sq ft. common area (which can be used for shows, meetings, etc.) 24-hour access and on-call building management.

This Friday is the last of our Spring "NY Matters" Film Series.

The film is "Lavender Lake," one that I have been wanting to see for eons myself and I am really hoping you will join me. The film-maker will be there, and hopefully Michele de la Uz (Fifth Avenue) and Craig Hammerman (cb6) as well, which could make for a very interested post screening discussion.
